What happens when you put over 40 black belts on a single mat under the guidance of one of the world’s most renowned Aikido masters?
You get an unforgettable four hours of high-energy, high-level martial arts.
Recently, our club had the incredible privilege of attending a seminar led by visiting instructor Sensei Joe Thambu (8th Dan) from Australia. To say it was an inspiring day would be a massive understatement.
Back to Basics, Taken to the Edge
Sensei Joe Thambu is legendary for his dynamic, precise, and practical approach to Aikido, and this seminar was a masterclass in just that. Over four intensive hours, the seminar pushed everyone’s boundaries by covering a massive breadth of material:
The Power of Fundamentals:
We started where all great Aikido begins—deep-diving into the core mechanics of posture and balance. Sensei Thambu demonstrated how minor adjustments create immense power and control.
Real-World Application:
The training then transitioned into sharp, effective self-defence scenarios and knife disarms, proving just how relevant traditional Aikido remains today.
Freestyle Flow:
We capped things off with Jiyu waza (freestyle throws), where the energy on the mat truly electrified as everyone put their fluid movement and adaptability to the test.
Celebrating New Steps on the Journey
While sharing the mat with dozens of seasoned black belts is always a thrill, the real highlight of the seminar was watching our own team step up to the challenge.
This year, our contingent included some new faces taking a massive, brave step forward on their black belt journeys. Experiencing this level of Aikido for the first time can be daunting, but our team handled it with immense focus and spirit.
What’s Next?
A seminar like this doesn’t end when the mats are rolled up. We are bringing all that incredible energy and high-level insight straight back into our regular classes.
Thank you to Sensei Joe Thambu for sharing his unparalleled knowledge with us, and thank you to everyone from our club who came out to train, support, and grow together. See you all on the mat to practice what we learned! Osu!
